THIMUN Qatar 4-7 April 2021 Issues on the agenda
ALL DELEGATES WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE SC, HSC & CCPCJ SHOULD COME PREPARED WITH AT LEAST ONE WRITTEN RESOLUTION IN THEIR ASSIGNED COMMITTEE AND POLICY STATEMENTS ON ALL ISSUES IN THEIR FORUM
The theme of THIMUN Qatar 2021 is Sustainable Development Goal 13-Climate Action. In the time Before COVID 19 (BC19), climate action activists would never have dreamed of a global lockdown and reduction in consumption such as has been seen in 2020. Global CO2 emissions are down, new life is emerging and our tired planet has had a chance to recover ecologically in unprecedented ways. However, the human and economic cost of COVID 19 has been enormous- many of us, THIMUN Qatar’s office included, have lost loved ones to this virus, and many more have lost access to employment and basic services. Homelessness is on the rise, and many humanitarian efforts have been halted. Domestic violence, homelessness, hunger, children out of school and an increase in crime have all been negatively affected. It is more important than ever to engage youth on the issues of a rapidly changing world- in of crises youth find their strength.
This year, for our 10th annual conference, THIMUN Qatar has been proud to connect directly to UN organs and put together an agenda that not only reflects the UN agenda’s workings for 2021, it has also incorporates youth issues for the first time. Each forum contains at least one Youth Issue on the agenda, where delegates act as youth delegates of their assigned country. This Youth Voice is to be shared widely in a consolidated document which will represent Youth Voice.
THIMUN Qatar is proud to support the work of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the Education 4 Justice (E4J) initiative, and to incorporate UNODC mandate issues into our 2021 Conference through the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ), run with rules of procedure that more closely align to the working of the CCPCJ. We will also continue to run the World Health Assembly and Historical Security Council to our list of forums for the second year running. Applications for Historical Security Council are accepted form participating schools, are due October 13th and can be found here.
Finally, THIMUN Qatar X 2021 will not be fielding an Arabic Committee, instead we will be developing an extended Arabic Conference in 2021.
THIMUN Qatar values the academic integrity of the conference. In addition to requiring policy statements on each of the issues on the agenda for the selected committees, (with the exception of Security Council, Historical Security Council and CCPCJ) by December 30th 2021 (click here to upload policy statements), THIMUN Qatar’s Executive team have formulated issue briefs to support delegates understanding of some of the issues that are harder to access. A summary of the issue briefs can be found below, and again linked to the issues on the agenda.
