SUMMARY:YOUTH LED: The Age of Information or Misinformation?
DESCRIPTION:The Age of Information or Misinformation?\nWhen information is at our fingertips are people today actually more informed than their predecessors or are they actually more misguided than ever before? Our age has been described as the age of information\, nevertheless\, the mass of information we have access to has led to confusion\, mistrust\, and propaganda masquerading as truth. This has led to an increasingly divided society where chasms exist between groups depending on which source of information they choose to believe and which group they identify with\, and therefore are inclined to trust. This has been exemplified historically through the conflicting opinions regarding the best solution for the Middle East crisis and more recently in the division between the people who trust the Covid-19 vaccine and those who view it as a risk to their health. In this workshop\, we will discuss how information spreads especially in the age of social media\, and what makes people believe the information they receive and view while mistrusting other sources. Finally we will discuss the best methods of evaluating what we believe and how to better contribute to the spread of reliable and trustworthy information.

SUMMARY:YOUTH LED: Fake News\, Lies\, and Propaganda: Identifying Fallacies and Disinformation in a chaotic world
DESCRIPTION:False news and lies have always been part of media history. And today\, it is more prominent than ever. From satirical stories to false contextualization and from manipulated headlines to fabricated content\, fake news is everywhere. Lies travel with frightening speed on the internet\, random claims spark angry backlashes\, and disinformation is commonplace. In such a chaotic world\, it is important to have media literacy – identifying fake news and fallacies in journalism becomes an essential skill to survive. This workshop will throw light on the outreach of mass media\, the role it plays in shaping public opinion\, the impacts fake news can have\, the psychological and practical reasons it spreads quickly\, what we can do to combat its spread\, and more. There will be several audience engagement activities\, including a word cloud activity\, some GK-based questions\, reflection and opinion-based discussion\, analysis of fake news articles\, audience polls\, etc. This session will hopefully make the audience more aware and careful in the current information environment.

SUMMARY:YOUTH LED: Don't Speak\, Communicate
DESCRIPTION:As the name suggests\, this workshop stresses the importance of communication\, not just speaking. While speaking simply involves delivering a speech or a lecture in front of an audience\, communication focuses on making that speech heard\, making your message understood\, be it in front of one person or hundreds. If you often avoid asking doubts in classes\, are afraid to present your views in group projects\, often get ignored in your friend circle or feel shy speaking in front of groups of people\, this workshop is for you.As a teenager\, I hope to share my journey with communication skills building and give tangible advice as to how to get the confidence to speak in front of an audience\, make your speeches meaningful and learn to convert your thoughts into words in an effective manner. I’ll also show examples of the do’s and don’t’s of communication and hold interactive exercises to better understand the concepts. Overall\, you’ll definitely return as a better communicator after the workshop.

SUMMARY:Diversity Atlas: Leadership through Diversity
DESCRIPTION:What is diversity? Is it a school policy? Is it a recruitment quota? Is it rewriting policy for recruitment so if a diverse person happens to apply\, they are not discriminated against in policy? Or is it a new way of thinking\, a new way of outreach\, and the future of our global village? Diversity Atlas is a technological tool that allows users to discover language\, religion\, ethnicity\, country of birth and a range of other demographic dimensions of diversity that will help young leaders understand what a robust diversity mindset is.In this workshop participants will have the opportunity to build personal and leadership skills by exploring other cultures such as aboriginal\, refugee and migrant worker experiences. The workshop will also demonstrate how educators use Diversity Atlas to enhance learning of empathy in classrooms today.
